OVERVIEW & INTENT OF THE PROGRAMME
The 2007 Environmental Packaging Awards was once again a showcase for the environmental standards, best practices and initiatives being achieved in New Zealand by packaging manufacturers, brand owners, retailers, recycling operators, young designers and users of packaging.
The INTENT of the biennial Awards programme, first introduced in 1999, is to recognise and reward those companies, local authorities and tertiary students who are making a significant contribution to improve the environmental performance of packaging, packaging systems, environmental education and the operation of recycling and recovery facilities.
Factors include:
Achieving material or energy reductions. |
Optimising the opportunity for materials recovery and developing /fostering sustainable markets. |
Utilising most effectively recycled/recovered materials. |
Representing packaging systems which minimise the adverse effects on the environment. |
Education programmes which motivate, explain and solicit positive response from the public for materials recovery. |
Key messages on product or through promotion or media coverage which encourage the consumer to think about issues of disposal prior to purchase. |
In 2007 there were 10 categories plus the overall Supreme Award.
Entries were considered by an independent panel of judges and technical advisors against the nominated criteria.
IMPORTANT NOTE
The Awards Programme was set up to recognise and reward individuals, companies, councils and organisations for their positive contribution in improving the overall impact of packaging, packaging processes, systems and education/promotional programmes on the New Zealand environment.
The programme WAS NOT set up to promote one material type or packaging sector over another.
Therefore the Packaging Council strongly requests that private promotion of winning entries be carried out in the spirit of the Awards programme and NOT be used as an opportunity to score commercially over another sector.
