JUDGES COMMENTS: The judges thought it "refreshing" that a local body had embraced a highly topical / political issue with absolute resolve to find a better solution to the reuse of recovered material from glass containers. The approach has been integrated with contractors Higgins and Fullcircle, well project managed and well researched. The entrant has looked at "real" costs of collection, disposal and recovery. The glass
reuse volume potential is large and relevant to the area.

JUDGES COMMENTS: This entrant has been an ardent innovator for many years in waste recovery. In the case of their glass entry they have turned a low value product into something of high value and one which could be sold outside their immediate location. They have used available technologies to produce an outstanding product, including BLAST GLASS for the sandblasting industry and FILTERCRYSTAL as a filter media in swimming and spa pools. |

WINNER: The Waste Resource Trust (Waiheke Island)

island. |

Here is a group of locals that have put their heads together and come up with a solution to deal with their glass waste. Their solution enables them to treat and use glass locally - well done! The mainland, watches with interest as there are other locations with similar problems to Waiheke.
