It does not relate to the package itself but pertains solely to production methodologies.

WINNER: Maniaia Mist Paper Solutions Ltd

FOR: Kiwifruit tray for organic and export markets

DESCRIPTION: The founding director of Maniaia Mist developed a deep concern and environmental consciousness when working for 3 years packing kiwifruit. Issues with rejection of sub standard kiwifruit and fruit deteriorating in storage, unsuitable for animal consumption being dumped at landfill at a cost of $90/tonne.

JUDGES COMMENTS: Turning waste into gold is not easy however this entry has shown that "Kiwi ingenuity" and collaboration can overcome many hurdles. Making packaging from waste and enhancing its value. This entry is an excellent use of a by-product. Much research and development is evident in this innovative combination of material and processing design.

HIGHLY COMMENDED
WINNER: Criterion Manufacturing Ltd

FOR: Environmentally benign packaging for ready-to-assemble (flat pack) furniture

DESCRIPTION: Continual reductions on product protection packaging is a Criterion company goal. Prior to commencing this project 500 different products required 4500m3 of polystyrene for packaging/year at a cost of $500,000.

JUDGES COMMENTS: The reduction and substitution in use of expanded polystyrene for cushioning of large consumer items has been a dilemma for manufacturers for some time. The almost cradle to the grave consideration of environmental impact throughout the manufacture and disposal of packaging around this entry was excellent. In making this application the entrant has considered their responsibilities with significant reduction in energy and waste.

FOR: It's in the Bag! Thermo-Fusion Reprocessed Plastic Pallet

DESCRIPTION: Range Industries Ltd was formed to develop a new proprietary process for the reprocessing of certain forms of plastic waste streams previously channelled to landfills.

JUDGES COMMENTS: With its leading technological process this company has the ability to use different types of contaminated plastics and form them cleverly into a product. The process essentially diverts low value plastics waste which would otherwise go to landfill. The judges congratulate the entrant on their projections into the future and look forward to the increased uptake this process is anticipating.

DESCRIPTION: Fonterra's eco efficiency programme has been running since 2003 with a national target set at 90% reduction of waste to landfill by the end of 2009 (75% by end of June 2008) and is on track to reach this target.

DESCRIPTION: Films are derived from wood pulp which is harvested from managed plantations and are fully biodegradable and compostable. These films can be used for twist wrap, glued bags and lamination, for products where protection from moisture is not required.

ENTRY TITLE: 23/28L Dual Height Crate

DESCRIPTION: When Foodstuffs Wellington introduced a Returnable Transit Packaging System for the distribution of fresh poultry from suppliers to retail stores early 2007, it was a culmination of a 10 month project. Viscount worked with the entire supply chain to develop a new format dual height crate that has bought major environmental benefits, e.g. the removal of 180 tonnes of cardboard per annum.
