  EDUCATION PROGRAMME AWARD

WINNER: THE WAREHOUSE

FOR: BAGS FOR GOOD - THE WAREHOUSE PLASTIC BAG WASTE REDUCTION PROGRAMME

DESCRIPTION: Although messaging around plastic bags had been in place for many years free and despite a 19% reduction in plastic bag numbers relative to a 2004 baseline, free checkout bags issued by retailers are still a touchstone environmental issue.

A decision was taken in August 2008 to engage with customers more vigorously in the behavioural changes necessary to secure a step change in the responsible use of shopping bags.

A cross functional team established that engaging and communicating with customers was key, but to simply sell bags at cost would not provide a sufficient price incentive. It was decided that a 10 cent charge with all the proceeds being donated to local community groups would provide comfort for customers that bag profits were going to a good cause, and meet the key objective of reducing waste.
