ASTRON PLASTICS EXCELLENCE IN PACKAGING OF
  EXPORTED PRODUCTS AWARD
This category is calling for excellence in packaging of exported products. The great distances to many of New Zealand's overseas markets and concerns raised about the resources consumed in moving products such distances show how vitally important it is for New Zealand's exporters to demonstrate and promote the efficiency of their supply chains.
  WINNER

WINNER: FONTERRA

FOR: NEW AMF PACKAGING

DESCRIPTION: Anhydrous Milk Fat (AMF) used to be packed in a format known as 'bag in the box' - packaging which was developed over 15 years ago for 1 tonne of AMF into the main export markets of USA, Canada, Mexico, China & Australia.

The packaging system as a whole, which embraces Filling and Packing, Transport and Logistics, as well as the Packaging itself, had become increasingly problematic in a modern Supply Chain environment.

Customers were finding issues with leakage, product stability, and disposal costs. A cross functional team which included not just Fonterra but their customers as well, Mars & Kraft, was established to find $8m savings per year, and introduce the opportunity to remove over 40,000 pallets and 2,500 tonnes of paper.

It has delivered to the customer a world class package which is highly functional, eliminates leakage and spoilage issues, is hygienic, and offers superior product integrity and shelf life.
