Description: In 2003 Spring Humphreys was seconded away from his operational role to head up a new environmental initiative Fonterra was launching. The initiative became Fonterra's Eco-Efficiency Programme. Through Spring's commitment and leadership the Eco-Efficiency programme has introduced policies and practices aimed at minimising both the amount of waste generated and the amount of waste sent to landfill.

This focus on reducing waste, reusing and recycling has emerged as a model of best practice and Eco-Efficiency is now implemented across 136 of Fonterra's sites, stores and offices around NZ including the consumer goods business and other subsidiaries of Fonterra nationwide.

Judge's comments: Spring has achieved impressive results for Fonterra across a number of KPI's. The judges especially liked how the learning experiences were shared with colleagues across the 136 sites where the eco-efficiency programme is implemented.

Winner 2: Karen Warman

Description: Karen Warman is a true champion of sustainable practices that encompass not only the Resene network but all external stakeholders as well. Nominated by VIP Packaging, Karen involves all key stakeholders in the Resene vision, is realistic in terms of conversion, is passionate and enthusiastically committed and has absolutely changed the culture within the VIP business through their involvement with Resene.

Her expectation of suppliers and partners is a dogged commitment to both Resene's environmental strategy and the adoption of stakeholder sustainable practices and strategies.

Judge's comments: Karen Warman through her work at Resene has provided a fantastic contribution towards environmental excellence. The judges considered her to be a true example of a 'Green Champion".
