Judge's comments: This entry shows how new advanced technology for biodegradable materials can tackle the problem of food waste. The judges were impressed with how the bag simplifies the collection of food waste as a first step towards the goal of achieving waste reduction in this difficult area.

Highly commended: VIP Packaging

For: Paint Pails manufactured from 100% Post Consumer Injection Material

Description: In late 2009 VIP Packaging and Resene Paints agreed an objective to evaluate the feasibility of re-using paint pails collected through the ResenePaintwise programme. In-house trials concluded that pails manufactured from 100% post consumer material performed in test at the same level as pails manufactured from virgin material. Resene subsequently filled the pails and distributed them through the supply to measure and ratify performance.

Judge's comments: The judges felt that this entry deserved a highly commended for using advanced technology to create a product which reduces environmental impact.

For: Right Weight Wine Bottle

Description: The 'Right Weight' project was undertaken to deliver O-I NZ and its customers substantially lighter weight and more environmentally friendly wine bottles, without compromising the premium look and feel of NZ wine products. The bottles are designed with the same height and diameter therefore there is no requirement to invest in new filling components or secondary packaging making the change to a lightweight bottle effortless.

Judge's comments: The judges awarded this entry a highly commended in recognition of the application of new technology addressing export market demands, whilst also reducing packaging, and preventing greenhouse gas emissions from both production and transportation. They also recognised the world-leading recycled content of these bottles.
