For those wanting an introduction into packaging in New Zealand, a comprehensive educational resource called PAC-IT has been developed.
This resource, with the support from central government (Ministry for the Environment's Sustainable Management Fund, Ministry of Education), local government, industry and academics have prepared this multi-disciplinary activity illustrating packaging's benefits, the processes and methodologies associated with its production.
PAC-IT has been developed to support projects possible in a classroom with the focus on materials most likely to be used e.g. plastic, paper. PAC-IT also addresses environmental issues and aims to support the information needs of all teachers of years 1-10 for several years, so it is as complete as possible.
The components of PAC-IT are:
PAC-IT TEACHERS GUIDE- is aimed at teachers of years 1-10 who are intending to use, or are using, projects in packaging in their programme. Primarily supporting the technology curriculum PAC-IT is also useful in other learning areas such as science, social studies, maths, art, language and health.

1. The functions and types of packaging
2. Packaging materials
3. Investigating properties of packaging materials
4. Producing packaging
5. Disposal of packaging materials
6. Fun with used packaging materials

CANZBAC
The Packaging Council is proud to host the CANZBAC website, which is dedicated to promoting steel and aluminium can recycling.
www.canzbac.co.nz
Use this website to learn more about why steel and aluminium are the world's most recycled materials and how you can play your part in helping us get all those cans back!
New Zealanders use more than 400 million cans each year.
Aluminium and steel cans are 100% recyclable. The average family uses six steel cans each week – but only one of these cans is recycled.
Sending your cans back will:
- Save energy and resources
- Avoid waste and landfill pressure
- Reuse a valuable resource in a sustainable way
Use this website for information on how to recycle right.
