Packaging Council Launches Christmas Recycling Campaign & Reminds Shoppers to Think Before Taking a Plastic Bag

Christmas shoppers are being encouraged to think about the environment as they fill their Santa sacks.
Over the next two months New Zealanders will generate 30 percent more waste - and will only recycle half the amount of bottles and cans purchased.
The Packaging Council says Kiwis will send around 68-million Christmas cards and recommends people pick ones made of recycled paper - or send e-cards. The council's executive director, Paul Curtis, wants shoppers to try and cut back on packaging where possible, and opt for products with minimal wrapping.

Would getting cash back for your empty bottles or cans encourage you to recycle more? Well it was enough of an incentive to get beer swilling students in Otago returning their spoils. The system has already worked well, in the 70s and 80s. Now it is back in parliament as part of the Waste Minimisation Bill, but the packaging and drinks industry is not swallowing it. |

Packaging Council and NZ Business Council for Sustainable Development Discuss Economic Instruments to Tackle Waste |
Every year New Zealanders buy over 670,000 tonnes of packaging, recycling only about half. A nationwide survey on two proposed new waste taxes shows Kiwis give the thumbs down to container deposit charges but are happy to be taxed on waste going into landfills. Packaging Council executive director Paul Curtis and Peter Neilson from the New Zealand Business Council for Sustainable Development discuss New Zealand's mountain of waste. |

The Packaging Council is calling the 'container deposit legislation' a hark back to the seventies in a report that questions the actual costs and benefits of the Green's waste minimisation bill. To weigh up the waste is Paul Curtis from the Packaging Council. |
