OCTOBER 2005

October saw Accord parties formally recognise a year’s progress at a function which was an opportunity for all those involved from other than Central Government to meet the new Minister for the Environment, the Hon David Benson-Pope.   To view the Accord Annual Report click… here

Notwithstanding the differing positions of the various parties on particular issues the common commitment to acceptable environmental performance has resulted in a solid first year outcome and formed the basis for a successful year two.

Glass

Continuing Glass Position still being developed

Parties to the “Glass Issue” have met recently on two occasions to develop an approach to the way forward now that the original period of levying the importers has concluded. While satisfactory alternative uses to glass making are still to be accepted a number of overseas options have been identified but require sign off for local conditions. All parties recognise the need to avoid lengthy expensive assessments for processes already accepted overseas. It is also accepted that it is not sensible to send to O-I’s Penrose plant, glass which can not be used.

However support for the levy scheme has been very good with the majority of contributors accepting the need for initial support of the existing programme while requiring the long term practical solution now under debate.

The final outcome will be announced shortly.

Printing Industries New Zealand recently ran a series of seminars for members. The presentations were on changes to Tax resulting from the last budget and on ENVIRO-MARK® NZ.

Presenters from Landcare spoke about what Enviro-Mark was, the process involved, and successes of organisations that use the tool. The evidence shows that firms can obtain compliance, minimise their environmental impacts, reduce costs, and utilise the marketing advantages of being known as an environmentally active organisation.

It was pleasing to note that there were already a number of printing and paperboard packaging companies that are members and gaining very real benefits from using the Enviro-Mark process. It is hoped that these
presentations may be a catalyst for getting many more paperboard packaging and printing companies involved as part of their ''environmental'' efforts.

Recycling Operators of New Zealand

RONZ Glass Recyclers Advisory Group (GRAG) held a second meeting on 25 August to review the current glass situation and discuss options for future long-term solutions.  GRAG members agree it was imperative to have an overview of current long-term markets/solutions prior to formalising recommendations on behalf of industry.

Enhance and improve your recycling initiatives and facilitate the correct separation of materials. National recycling symbols have been designed and developed to encourage the standardisation of recycling signage.

An extensive range of symbols are available covering a number of classifications of material: glass, paper, metal, plastic, construction, organic, inorganic, and other. Each classification is differentiated by colour making it easier to identify the different material types.  All symbols can be downloaded (at no cost) from the RONZ website www.ronz.org.nz/nz_recycling_symbols/index.html
