Degradable plastics are likely to shape the future of the plastics industry and are anticipated to be the fastest growing segment of the sustainable packaging sector between 2010 and 2014 (Pike Research).
However, degradable plastics are a complex and evolving area with new products entering the marketplace all the time. Their increasing use in a wide range of applications has prompted the need to reduce potential misunderstandings about the environmental claims about these new products.
The Packaging Council is a signatory to: Managing the Transition: Degradable Plastics in New Zealand - A Guide and Industry Commitment, published by Plastics New Zealand in July 2009.
Signatories to the guide will:
- Assist the consumer to make informed decisions on the use of degradable plastics
- Consider end of life options for their degradable plastic
- Ensure their impact on the environment is minimised
- Reduce the risk of misinformation
- Use clear and concise labelling
The Packaging Council considers this guide to be an excellent and important contribution to the product stewardship of degradable plastic packaging.
