Policy Issues

Overview

According to the World Bank’s ‘Doing Business’ report, New Zealand ranks number two in the world in terms of ease of doing business.  The ‘Doing Business’ report ranks 183 economies, tracking indicators of the time and cost to meet government requirements to start and close a business, obtain licenses, get credit, pay taxes and other areas.

Such a high ranking demonstrates that New Zealand, in international terms, has a regulatory environment that is highly conducive to the operation of business.

One of the key roles of the Packaging Council is help New Zealand maintain that high ranking and to advocate on behalf of its members to ensure that the cost of environmentally related legislation and standards affecting packaging do not outweigh the benefits.

The Packaging Council is a strong advocate of industry led voluntary initiatives, which invariably lead to lower compliance costs and can achieve the same outcomes as a regulated approach.  See the Ministry for the Environment’s website for a full list of voluntary product stewardship schemes.

These pages summarise key environmentally related policy issues which could affect the packaging and packaged goods industry and provides the Packaging Council’s position on those issues.
