New Zealanders discard over 3 millions tonnes of waste to landfill each year. That's over 780 kilograms per person per year. So make a resolution for 2008 to be a green one by following the simple steps recommended by the Packaging Council of New Zealand.
Out food shopping or buying presents; celebrating a special event; throwing a party or a barbeque; on holiday at home or down at the beach, make 2008 green one by following 12 simple steps recommended by the Packaging Council of New Zealand. You can do your bit to cut down on waste by making use of the recycling facilities provided by your local council.
New Zealanders generate more waste when on holiday, peaking at an estimated 30% more waste over the summer holidays in line with international trends. Most of it can be recycled if people put it into the recycling crate rather than the rubbish bin. The amount of tonnes of glass recycled actually goes up by about 50% in January but we know for example that sales of glass and cans go up 3 times our normal levels over the holiday period and we want to encourage people to recycle it all.
Part of the problem is that people tend to know the collection times when they are at home but often these vary during holiday periods or they may be down at the bach and not know local arrangements.
We ask you to support our 12 steps to a greener 2008 initiative and make a difference in your local community and to resolve in 2008 to recycle more.
So whether it's a birthday or anniversary, Valentines Day or Easter, getting together with friends for drinks etc, you can do your bit to cut down on waste by making use of the recycling facilities provided by your local council.
